Cedar County has both the Cedar River and the Wapsipinicon River pass through its borders. Plus, numerous creeks. Fords or ferries were important to the early settlers to cross the water ways. Many times a town built up in this spot to support the traffic the ferry brought to town.
Cedar County also had several stone quarries within its' borders. These brought many people to work at the businesses. When times changed and the quarry business closed, the towns ceased to exist.

CHAIN LAKES is along Chain Bridge Road, just off Highway 94, south of Palo. There is a Chain Lakes Bridge, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.
In June, 1880, the Linn County Board of Supervisors appropriated $20,000 for the two-span, pinned Pratt truss, on massive stone abutments and piers. It was erected in 1884.
There is a Chain Lakes natural area, set along the bridge. The bridge was damaged in the 2008 flooding and remains closed and is used by pedestrians only.
